About us
A family home, opened to guests.
Our ancestors built Suraj Mahal in 1826 as a merchant's home, with three courtyards, a zenana wing and a durbar hall for visiting traders (sample story).
By 2000 it was crumbling. We spent nine years restoring it with traditional lime plaster, carved sandstone and natural pigments, and opened 14 rooms and suites in 2009. The family still lives in the east wing.
How we host
Restored, not renovated
Lime plaster, stone and natural pigments, by the craftspeople whose families built it.
Hosted by family
One of us is always at the haveli, and we eat on the roof most nights.
Honest tariffs
Every season and surcharge is on the website, night by night.
Good neighbours
